What is Strategy?

Put simply - your strategy is your plan to achieve your goals.

Think of a football match...

The Objective:

To win.

The Strategy:

To score goals and prevent your opposition from scoring.

The Tactics:

Splitting the team into defence, midfield and attack and matching your players skills with those of the opposing team ie a fast defender that can deal with a fast striker and so on.

Obviously this is a very simplistic way to look at strategy but the principle can easily be applied to business. To create a good strategy you need to really think about your objectives. If you're starting out then your business plan will help you to focus on what these objectives might be (remember to keep them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achieveable, Realistic and Time-related).

When it comes to strategy, the easiest thing to do is to break it down into the following headings:

  • How

  • What

  • Why

  • When

Some of the content within these headings will be easier to create than others, but stick with it as it will really help to create a concise, well thought through plan.

Once you've created your strategy, you'll need to look at the tactics and tools needed to help you deliver it. Don't forget to review your strategy regularly as a minimum once a year. You may need to change it, it may even have evolved naturally.
